During the fibre bending-abrasion test, the fibre sample is cycled back and forth over a wire or thin pin under given tension and defined angle, e.g. 90°. In this test, the number of cycles up to fibre breakage is the measured variable. Concerning fibres for apparel textiles, the test provides a measure for the tendency to pilling of the woven or knitted fabric: The smaller the cycle number to break occurrence, the lower is the tendency to pilling, since the pills that develop during textile wear would be shed within a short period.

A further test method in addition to the bending-abrasion test, which is also cyclic, is the cyclic stress test. Here, the fibre or yarn is subjected to an alternating change between tension and full relaxation. The measured variable is again the number of load cycles up to break occurrence. Such cyclic stress tests also supply valuable information regarding the fibre or yarn properties during processing, performance characteristics, e.g. for carpets, or the effects of special treatments in the case of human hair.

Finally, in the area of hair care products, conclusions can be drawn regarding the influence of the treatment media concerning hair characteristics, such as elasticity or brittleness, by subjecting the treated human hair to the bending-abrasion test and analysing the results.
The equipment features a clamping strip with 25 positions for the simultaneous testing of 25 fibres.

The FAVIGRAPH combines linear-density measurements and tensile tests in one test equipment.
The innovative characteristic of the FAVIGRAPH is a transfer clamp between the two measuring systems, into which the appropriately pre-tensioned fibre is manually loaded. At the start of the test the transfer clamp is positioned above the linear-density measuring head. First, the linear density of the fibre is determined. Thereafter, the transfer clamp turns to the tensile test section and places the fibre into the measuring- and draw-off clamp. During the tensile test it is already possible to insert the next fibre into the linear-density measuring head.

As a consequence, continuous parallel operation of both systems is ensured. With corresponding short fibre breakage times, cycle times of 15 sec are easily achieved resulting in a test output of 240 fibres per hour.

Moreover, a special advantage of the FAVIGRAPH is that the operator handles the fibre only once when introducing it into the transfer clamp at the linear-density measuring head.

The capillary or counterbore can be viewed alternately by switching. The inspection is done fully automatic. The capillaries are positioned according to a previously defined pattern using a comforatble assistant.

The microscope is used to inspect ring spinnerets with a pitch circle diameter from 210 to 410 mm. The spinneret is fixed on a stable rotary stage with stepper motor. The linear movement is also done by stepper motor driving a roll bearing guided slider.
A compact embedded PC does the imaging and calculation. LEDs with a long lifetime are used for the illumination. The transformers are integrated in the base. A pneumatic driven diffusor reduces light reflection along the capillary wall and increases the detection rate. A blow unit cleans the capillary from loose dirt.

    The performance of composite materials strongly depends on the adhesion of the fibres to the matrix. On the microscopic level different test procedures have been established in various research institutes, however, most results are not comparable, since none of these tests is standardized or commercially available. Macro- and micromechanical test methods have been employed to characterize the fiber-matrix adhesion. For macromechanical testing, composites with unidirectional aligned fibers are manufactured to perform a tensile test perpendicular to the fiber orientation (transverse tensile test). However, the maximum stress found in macroscopic tests is not only depending on the fiber-matrix adhesion, but also by additional factors: the fiber content, orientation, length, diameter and fiber distribution homogeneity, the pore void of the test specimens, and the mechanical properties of the fiber and the matrix. To achieve repeatable results for the fiber-matrix adhesion through macromechanical tests, it is hence necessary to keep tight control of the manufacturing process of the  specimen, making it difficult to compare the results across  laboratories.

    One of the most critical points to assure reproducible results in a micro-bond test is the precise embedding of the fibre in the matrix which is required to avoid shear forces. For this purpose the fibre has to be embedded exactly in the center of the matrix droplet. The pull-out device is easy to install and operate in the FAVIMAT+. A microscopic camera facilitates the adjustment of the clamps as close as possible to the matrix surface with perfect alignment. The complete set-up is called FIMATEST consisting of the embedding station FIMABOND and the pull-out device as accessory to the tensile-tester FAVIMAT+.

    The new system is the winner of the 2016 JEC innovation award

    Eight different approaches to bond strength determination have been proposed, which can be classified according to the following alternative features:
    - averaged/local (determination of the “apparent” or local interfacial shear strength (IFSS));
    - stress-based/energy-based (adhesion strength parameter and failure criterion local IFSS, τd, or critical energy release rate, Gic);
    - direct/indirect (adhesion strength determined from individual force-displacement curves or estimated from the data obtained for a set of specimens).

    For man-made fibres and in some cases even for natural fibres these tests are carried out on single fibres. Here, typical testing methods are the static tensile test, linear-density (fineness) measurement, and measurement of crimp extension, crimp stability as well as number of crimps.

    All of these tests are carried out on the same fibre section/sample. Transferring the fibre from one testing device to another is, therefore, no longer necessary.

    The Automization to reduce Labour time by 95% comes in 2 ways:
    ROBOT2 comprises a sample storage unit and a transfer clamp,
    the latter for transferring the single fibre from the storage unit to the test section, and a suction system for removing the waste fibres after each test. The sample storage unit contains up to 20 magazines, each of which can accommodate 25 individual fibres. Therefore, the total capacity of the unit amounts to 500 fibres.

    The AIROBOT2 is a variant of the ROBOT2 automatic fibre feed unit. Here the fibres are loaded pneumatically into the magazine in a semi-automatic loading unit.

    Present testing instruments are either purely manually-operated devices for each of the two test methods, or fully automatic “high-volume” test stations (HVI). The latter employ measuring systems which have to be calibrated using so-called calibration cotton. For this reason all measured results depend on the data of the calibration cotton as specified by its supplier. They are not directly traceable to physical base units.

    FIBROTEST of Textechno incorporates both fibre length measurement and fibre strength test within the same instrument. The two measurements – at first fibre length and thereafter fibre strength – are executed in succession on the same sample. After completing these measurements the sample mass between the clamps is automatically determined, which enables the calculation of the exact and absolute value of tenacity. Operation of the FIBROTEST does not require calibration cotton and is, therefore, independent of any influences from this side. Nevertheless the system can be calibrated with calibration cotton to duplicate HVI results.
